Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a plastic surgical procedure that is designed to improve functional or aesthetic appearance of the female genitalia. The vagina is made of an inner lip (Labia Minora) and an outer lip (Labia Majora). In some women the Labia Minora are too large, uneven, or non-symmetrical and can protrude beyond the Labia Majora. This can cause functional problems or discomfort as well as aesthetic concerns and interfere with self-confidence.

In women with functional problems, it can cause chafing and friction with clothes or irritation when exercising and become uncomfortable, or interfere with sexual activity. Others seeking this procedure might be self-conscious about the appearance of their Labia Minora and this can interfere with their self-esteem and relationships.  Some women may genetically be more affected but it can worsen with aging, pregnancy and child birth.

Treatment

LabiaplastyLabiaplasty is performed under General Anaesthetic in fully accredited hospitals. Dr Safvat only works with highly trained anaesthetics accredited with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The operation takes about an hour to perform.

Dr Safvat’s aim is to delicately and carefully remove the excess tissue and reshapes the region without interfering with the nerves and the sexual sensation of the region. The incisions are usually quite discreet. It is important to have the labiaplasty done by a specialist plastic surgeon who is used to handling delicate tissue, preserving nerves and accurate and precise wound closure.

Recovery

The procedure is done as a day-only procedure without the need to stay overnight in hospital.

There will be some swelling and bruising of the genital area. Swelling is mild to moderate and peaks at two to three days after surgery then disappearing rapidly over the next three weeks. This can be minimised with application of cold packs to the area. It is important to continue good hygiene of the area to prevent infection.

The sutures are absorbable and will fall away by themselves. It is recommended to wear loose underwear with a pad for 1-2 weeks to catch any spotting or light bleeding. Sexual activity can be resumed after 4-6 weeks when the wounds are healed and the inflammation settled.

Labiaplasty is an operation which is associated with a high rate of patient satisfaction.
